CEMEX Experto Ako! training enrich skills, lives of Bacolod masons
Masons from Talisay, Bacolod graduated recently from the CEMEX Experto Ako! masonry skills training of building solutions company CEMEX Philippines in partnership with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), marking the start of their new and better careers in the construction field.
The 33-day CEMEX Experto Ako! training conducted by licensed masonry instructors at the TESDA Regional Training Center in Talisay also marked another fulfillment of a valuable mission for both CEMEX and TESDA.
“The Experto Ako! program is not just about technical skills but it is also about helping you enrich yourselves,” said Chito Maniago, CEMEX Philippines Foundation executive director, to the Experto Ako! graduates. “You may say that CEMEX and TESDA have invested resources but know it in your hearts that the one who invested the most in this career endeavor is you. You have dedicated your personal time and effort to upgrade your skills and become better professional builders.”
Experto Ako! Masonry Skills Training Program is a flagship skills and livelihood project of CEMEX Philippines Foundation. To date, over 200 masons have graduated from the program. The training includes lessons and modules on proper cement application and equipment, values formation, and teamwork.

“At CEMEX, we try to help change lives by reinforcing our scholars’ livelihood skills and putting importance on character building. Through Experto Ako!, we are happy to be part of this change. And we will be much happier to see our mason graduates working in the industry,” said Martin Jereza, CEMEX Philippines area sales manager.
In the program, masons are also taught how to market their skills to gain more customers and build trust. During their graduation, each Experto Ako! scholar receives a personal masonry kit containing trowels, try-square, plumb bob, claw hammer, level bar, metal tape measure, hard hat, and boots among others.
The Bacolod batch of Experto Ako! posted a 100% passing rate in the assessment administered by TESDA. By passing the exam, they are now holders of National Certificate II (NC II) which they can use to their advantage in looking for better opportunities here or abroad.
TESDA Provincial Director for Negros Occidental Joel Villagracia emphasized that while the hard skills taught in TESDA will help students find work, the soft skills will help them sustain their jobs.
“There are 3Cs to achieve success: choice, chance, and change. Your participation in the Experto Ako! program is a choice. Chance is the opportunity given to you so you may acquire stronger competencies. Finally, change is the difference before and after you’ve had the training here in TESDA. This change is towards your improvement,” said Villagracia to the graduates.
“Our target is not only to train people but we are also very much glad to see TESDA graduates working in the industry. By this, we know we have fulfilled our mission,” said Engr. Pablo Cortez, Jr., TESDA Regional Training Center administrator.
