CEMEX equips school children of Uling Elementary School
Arming children with the tools they need to do well in school is empowering them to pursue a bright future. As part of its advocacy to help build the future for the Filipino children, building solutions leader CEMEX Philippines recently donated over 700 backpacks containing school supplies at Uling Elementary School in the City of Naga, Cebu.
The school supplies were given to grades 1 to 6 pupils of the public elementary school which is located in the mountainous area of Uling, the last barangay of Naga City situated at the boundary.
“The children were excited to receive the school supplies because some of them don’t have these things. They only borrowed from classmates while others are dejected to even come to school without study materials. It was really fulfilling to see their smiles when we shared with them these gifts,” shared Marlito Cabigas, CEMEX Philippines community relations officer.
The initiative supports the company’s “Build the Nation Together” corporate social responsibility program that is dedicated to uplifting lives and communities through sustainable programs for the society and the environment. The school activity is under the “Build Education” cluster, a holistic multi-sectoral program which aims to advance education solutions for various underserved communities in the country.
“The school supplies will be of great help for the pupils in their journey towards learning. They are now inspired more to go to school and study harder because of the new materials received. Pupils who are likely to drop out because of the lack of any paper or pen are now encouraged to attend classes,” said Jennifer Asedillo, Uling Elementary School principal.
“Helping build the nation not only through our building solutions but also by how we make a positive impact in communities is at the heart of our values as a company,” said Erlinda Lizardo, CEMEX Philippines corporate communications and public affairs manager.
The Uling Elementary School project is just one of the ways CEMEX contributes to transforming communities through education. Through the H.E.R.O program, its employees also join forces for the annual Brigada Eskwela (National School Maintenance Week) held by the Department of Education before the start of the academic year.
