CEMEX Philippines inaugurates renewable power facility
CEMEX Philippines takes a significant step in its CO2 reduction commitment with the commissioning of a 4.5MW heat recovery facility in its APO Cement plant in Naga City, Cebu.
This hi-tech heat recovery technology provides clean energy to the cement production process by capturing the excess heat from the plant’s machines and converting it into electricity.
“Heat recovery helps lessen dependence of CEMEX Philippines on fossil fuels and reduce our carbon footprint. This is a key lever in achieving our global aspiration of having 55% of our power come from renewable sources by 2030,” said Ignacio Mijares, CEMEX Philippines President and CEO.
“This heat recovery facility helps ensure we get closer to our aspiration to increase our consumption of clean energy and decarbonize our operations. At CEMEX, we continuously push for and discover innovative solutions to reduce emissions,” Mijares added.
APO cement will be able to self-generate 8% of its power requirement using this heat recovery technology, further allowing CEMEX Philippines to contribute to climate neutrality equivalent to 3,853 cars off the road in a year and 292, 955 tree seedlings grown in ten (10) years.
Across CEMEX units globally, creating low-carbon technologies and investing in clean energy is well established. In recent years, 100% of CEMEX’s electricity in the United Kingdom has come from renewable sources. In 2020 CEMEX announced a similar commitment for its 32 ready-mix plants in Poland with all electricity consumed being generated from renewable sources.
In CEMEX Philippines, the first heat recovery facility was inaugurated in 2015 in its Solid Cement plant in Antipolo City, in collaboration with Sinoma Energy Conservation Ltd. Currently, Solid plant is able to self-generate 18% of its power requirement using the technology.
APO Cement’s heat facility was designed, built and will be operated and managed by Sinoma Energy Conservation (Cebu) Waste Heat Recovery Co. Inc. Other heat recovery projects are planned across CEMEX operations worldwide.
Globally, CEMEX has committed to a “Future in Action” strategy that focuses on addressing climate change by reducing its its CO2 emissions by 35% by 2025 and 40% by 2030.
