Waste management solution: The CEMEX Way
Building solutions leader CEMEX shared its sustainable cement manufacturing process and its alternative technology of waste disposal in the recently held Environment Summit and Ecological Waste Management Exhibition of the National Solid Waste Management Commission and the Environmental Management Bureau - National Capital Region.
During the Summit, CEMEX Energy Manager Rowell Peñaflor talked about CEMEX's waste management solution which involves collecting the segregated residual wastes from communities and properly treating them through co-processing. This method not only reduces solid waste but also decreases carbon emission as it involves less utilization of fossil fuels for cement kilns.
CEMEX’s Solid Cement Plant in Antipolo City also has a facility that converts waste heat into electricity that supplies 25 percent of the plant’s total power requirement. The process is recognized by the Department of Energy. In fact, the plant has an ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System (EnMS) seal, the first for a cement plant in the country.
CEMEX actively participates in various local and overseas climate change campaigns and fora to share its sustainable business practices for nation building and preservation of the planet. Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, joined this Environment Summit and Ecological Waste Management Exhibition where she learned of CEMEX Philippines’ waste management solution during the segment on Full Waste Recovery and Recycling Symposium held at the Mini Theatre of the QCX Museum inside Quezon Circle.
