Zero Basura Olympics features CEMEX in launch of best practices book
The story of CEMEX Philippines’ waste management program was cited in the recently launched Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) for Business Book. Titled “Building a Sustainable Earth,” the feature on CEMEX’s sustainability program detailed how the cement manufacturer is integrating environmental responsibility in its operations.
CEMEX was lauded for its brilliant idea in addressing the challenge of trash wherein certain plastics from surrounding communities and plant premises are treated with a technology for proper waste disposal. This is made possible through the co-processing method of CEMEX wherein segregated plastic wastes are completely destroyed in the kiln of the cement plant. This initiative has significantly helped lower the percentage of residual waste disposed in landfills and promoted proper waste segregation in accordance to environmental regulations.
The book also featured CEMEX’s milestones in energy management. Its subsidiaries Solid Cement Corporation and Apo Cement Corporation are the first cement plants in the Philippines to pass the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System audits. Its subsidiaries, Apo Cement Corporation and Solid Cement Corporation, produce and market the well established cement brands APO and Rizal.
